The famous media player Winamp will shut down next month, over 15 years after its initial release. Though Winamp eventually lost popularity, in the late '90s and early 2000s it was one of the go-to media players for listening to local music or radio streams. In 2002, Winamp's maker, Nullsoft, was acquired by AOL for over $80 million in stock, where it's remained in development until now. A Mac and an Android version were even released in recent years, though they never found the same fan base that its customizable Windows client did.

No reason is given for Winamp's shutdown, but its popularity has certainly waned: simple, built-in audio solutions like iTunes are now ubiquitous across platforms, making Winamp a far more specialized app. In a retrospective published last year, Ars Technica reportedthat Winamp had existed for years on life support, but that those involved didn't believe it was dead yet. Now that it's nearly gone, those who want to relive old times should head over to Winamp's site before December 21st, when it'll no longer be available — its famous motto, of course, will always live on somewhere.

Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release.

Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years.

Same.

Was a big Winamp guy. Then I got an iPod, got iTunes, and I never really had the same use for Winamp. Still a sad day for the nostalgic side of me. :(

I peg itunes as the downfall too, itunes had podcasts, songs, etc...and since you had to install that to use your ipod at the time, it didn't seem useful to have both installed.

Winamp may have a slight pulse as a new member of Xbox Music:

Winamp could live to see another day: according to TechCrunch, AOL is currently in talks to sell its famous media player to Microsoft. Rumor of the potential deal comes just a day after Winamp announced that it would be shutting down a month from now, over fifteen years after the wildly customizable and once quite-popular media player was first released. The deal isn't yet final — and TechCrunch warns that it could just be "wishful thinking" on the part of AOL — but it says that the two companies are working out a price.

The deal would also include Shoutcast, an internet radio service that was also built by Winamp's creator, Nullsoft. Though Shoutcast remains operational today, TechCrunch reports that its closure will be announced next week. With Winamp's drastic decline in popularity and utility, it's not clear exactly why Microsoft would be interested in buying. At the least, the Winamp name still seems to bring back fond memories, and perhaps Microsoft too wants to see it stick around.

My guess and the TechCrunch guess is that Microsoft is really only interested in the Shoutcast function because Xbox Music has or will launch 50,000 Internet Only radio stations.

Zune was killed off in the US with Windows 8 in favor of Xbox Music and Xbox Videos.

They might get rid of it because you don't think it's a good name? What?

There is a petition to try and get AOL to open source the project if Microsoft doesn't take the bait....I don't think that would happen though...

And don't know if that is a sarcastic quote or not, but I'm pretty sure he means that when people think the name Zune that they think of low quality and not as good as Apple. Which was true and why Microsoft has now gone with Xbox Music because while their Zune stuff wasn't regarded well, the Xbox brand is highly sought after.
